My spouse and I paid for a 1 year subscription of Martha Stewart Living Magazine for my mother as a Christmas gift. November 2012, 1 month before the subscription was to expire, they start sending us cards in the mail asking if we would like to renew our gift subscription.

We opted not to and sent back the cancellation card in the postage paid envelop provided. Next month same thing. 1st week in January they send us an "invoice". I call the 1-800 number and go through the steps for phone cancellation.

Nearly 3 weeks later, they send us a second "invoice" with this rude quote "...I'm sure it's just an oversight on your part. That's why I'm sending you this reminder, along with a duplicate invoice for the amount due." At this point we are pissed, and feeling very harassed. I call the company directly and speak to a live person. They claim to have never received either of our mailed in requests not to renew.

They say they did get the January phone cancellation but the 2nd invoice must have been in the mail already (despite the fact they were 3 weeks apart!).

This aggressive and confusing marketing tactic has no doubt tricked many people into renewing just because they assumed the "invoices" meant they actually owed the company money that they in fact don't. I will NEVER be purchasing a gift subscription to this magazine ever again nor will I ever purchase it myself after this incident!

I just received about the third notice with the same problem. I purchased a one year subscription and since it expired I have received invoices which appear to imply I owe a balance.

The one received this date states for ten issues the price is 19.95 and due by 08/15/14, two weeks away. It reads that my account is past due. That I may have misplaced earlier notices regarding an account balance. To avoid future suspension of services or credit privileges I should remit payment immediately.

I did not purchase on credit, I paid in full when ordered. If I choose to allow my subscription to expire, which I do, it is not an account balance. I am about to call the 1800 number to advise the same.

This is illegal in my opinion, particularly when elderly people get such billing and think they owe money. Shame on you Martha Stewart!
